An ocean is generally defined as a body of saline water that composes much of the planet’s hydrosphere. The oceans cover almost 72% of the world’s surface. These include The Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and the Arctic Ocean.
There are numerous problems which are man-made that come to light very frequently which harm the environment, specifically the ocean. When it comes to acting on preserving the ocean, it is mostly presumed to be near impossible for a person or a small group of people to preserve the ocean on their own.
Few Common Practices That Harms the Ocean
For one to think about preserving the ocean, he or she should first point out the common practices which go a long way in destroying the ocean which is a much needed resource.
- Accidentally or at times intentionally leaving behind nets and any other fishing materials in the ocean which end up harming the sea life. Most end up dying after they are trapped due to either exhaustion or suffocating. This makes it hard for them to get to the surface of the water for air thus they end up dead
- Use of poison to fish also damages the ocean. In certain areas such as the Philippines, fishermen traditionally pour cyanide into the ocean to catch fish easily. However, such methods end up killing other sea life like plants and even the corals that form the reefs.
- Waste such as sewage and garbage finding its way to the ocean harms the ocean leading to decomposition of the organic matter that destroys the ocean’s ecosystem.
These common practices mentioned here are just but a few of what man does to the ocean which results in its pollution thus hazardous. These are some of the things that should be avoided to preserve oceans and the marine life in them.
How to Preserve the Ocean
Paying attention to the idea of configuring civilization and figuring the ideal practices, it becomes very easy to preserve the ocean which is a very important resource. This can be done by getting the regular people to be involved and kick-start the journey of change. This can be done by educating the fishermen and to the owners of the local groceries into storing varied types of sea food. They should be taught on not to overfish one species of fish.
The local inhabitants should also be careful on what they throw away to the ocean to avoid pollution of the marine ecosystem. Fishermen should also be advised on not leaving their fishing gear out in the ocean as it endangers the sea life that live in the ocean.
It is important to make the people realize the value of the ocean and also of the life in it, either plant or fish. We should safeguard the ocean for our own good and for the future generation. Preserving the oceans should be one of our main priorities as it’s the home of vast sea life.
